This device was invented by Emil Heinrich du Bois-Reymond (1818-1896). The “frog gun” was invented to demonstrate the stimulation of the nerves in the leg of a frog. It works in the following way. A frog’s foot is mounted on the glass plate inside the tube, with the nerve ends exposed and connected to the keys on the top of the pistol grip. When these keys are pressed, contact is established and the leg muscles contract. The model for sale is in perfect condition. the image of frog legs is a contemporary addition to better highlight the concept.
an exhibition which includes a similar model took place at the London Science Museum: FROM FROG PISTOL TO FREUD in 2013
